Type Locality and Naming
Save Basin (Southeastern Zimbabwe). Named for local geographic features in the Save Basin of southeastern Zimbabwe.

Lithology and Thickness
A fine-grained, highly carbonaceous succession characterized primarily by dark, coaly shales and mudrocks. It represents a distinct, localized interval of peat accumulation and anoxic mud deposition.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Overlies the Mkwasine Grits and Mudstones Fm
Upper contact
Conformably overlain by the coarser-grained Marare Mudstones and Grits Fm.
Regional extent
Geographically restricted to the Save Basin in southeastern Zimbabwe. Correlates broadly with the upper Ecca Gr to basal Beaufort Gr transition in the Main Karoo Basin.
